The University of Ghana chapter of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG-UG) is demanding the resignation of Auditor-General Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu, following a contentious audit report that alleged payroll irregularities at the university.
The Auditor-General’s recent special payroll verification audit claims the University of Ghana overstated employee compensation by GH¢59.2 million between 2022 and 2024. UTAG-UG has rejected the findings, labeling them as “misleading, damaging, and unethical.”
Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News on May 20, UTAG-UG Secretary Dr. Jerry Joe Harrison expressed dismay over the report’s release without giving the university a chance to respond or clarify the alleged discrepancies.
“We must begin to think about ethics and hold ourselves to a higher standard… People must know what they can and cannot do, regardless of what the law says,” Dr. Harrison stressed, questioning whether the Auditor-General personally reviewed the document.
UTAG-UG argues that the audit has unfairly smeared the university’s image and damaged public trust. The association is threatening to petition the Presidency for the Auditor-General’s removal if he does not resign voluntarily.
“If he continues to stay in office, as we have promised, we will take the next step by petitioning the Presidency,” Dr. Harrison warned.
UTAG-UG has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the integrity of the university and holding state institutions accountable through ethical and legal means.
