The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has directed its members to call off their ongoing strike by October 29, 2024.
The strike, which began on October 10, 2024, was in protest against the government’s perceived lack of action in addressing illegal mining activities (galamsey), which have caused significant environmental damage to river bodies and forest reserves.
The industrial action by UTAG members across public universities disrupted academic activities nationwide, affecting thousands of students. In a statement, the NEC urged UTAG members to return to teaching, with tertiary students expected to resume classes by November 1, 2024.
