The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has unveiled plans to provide vital assistance to victims, particularly students, affected by the recent Akosombo Dam flood disaster. Following a comprehensive assessment of the aftermath in eight affected districts, UTAG revealed a pressing need for more substantial aid, citing the insufficiency of emergency responses from various entities, including the government.
In a report launched to address the impact of the dam spillage and subsequent floods, UTAG highlighted the inadequacy of relief efforts and stressed the urgency for enhanced support, especially in education and essential social aspects.
To mitigate the challenges faced by affected students, UTAG has announced the establishment of the UTAG Educational Support Fund. This initiative will offer seed money amounting to GH¢200,000 to assist students residing in selected communities within the affected areas. The fund will be accessible to all student victims entering any of the 15 member universities under UTAG.
During a media address, Prof. Mamudu A. Akudugu, the national president of UTAG, underscored the deficiencies in the relief aid received by flood victims, particularly in terms of both quantity and quality of food supplies. He emphasized that the provision of mainly cereal-based items fell short of meeting the nutritional needs of those affected.
Highlighting the necessity for a more diverse and nutritious food supply, Prof. Akudugu stressed the importance of incorporating protein-based foods in relief efforts. He cautioned against solely relying on easily transportable food items like rice and canned goods, emphasizing the critical role of varied diets in ensuring proper nutrition, especially for children’s growth and brain development.
The pledge by UTAG signifies a proactive step towards addressing the pressing needs of flood-affected students, aiming to alleviate the challenges they face in the aftermath of the disaster.
