The Upper West Regional Minister, Lawyer Charles Lwanga Puozuing, has publicly apologized after sparking outrage among the Muslim community for comments deemed “blasphemous” and disrespectful to Islamic practices.
In a widely circulated video, the Minister was heard making remarks that belittled the importance of the five daily Islamic prayers. He suggested that individuals who strictly observe the five prayer times “do not have proper work” and could “combine all five prayers and God will understand.”
The statement ignited swift condemnation, especially from the Office of the Upper West Regional Chief Imam. In a press release signed by Executive Secretary Abdul Rahman Ibrahim, the Muslim leadership described the comments as “insensitive, arrogant, and inflammatory.” The statement demanded:
1. A full and unqualified retraction of the Minister’s statement.
2. A formal and public apology to the Muslim community locally and nationally.
3. Fulfillment of these demands within 72 hours.
Before the ultimatum expired, Minister Puozuing led a delegation to meet with Muslim religious leaders across the region. He extended a heartfelt apology, acknowledging the inappropriateness of his earlier remarks.
The gesture was warmly received by the Muslim leadership, who emphasized unity and reconciliation. A special prayer was held during the meeting, symbolizing forgiveness and mutual respect.
