The United States has extended warm congratulations to John Dramani Mahama on his election as Ghana’s President, with his four-year term set to commence on January 7, 2025.
In a statement issued on December 10, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken lauded Ghana’s democratic process, highlighting the nation’s reputation as a model of stability and transparency in Africa. He praised the Electoral Commission of Ghana for its dedication to conducting free and credible elections.
The Electoral Commission officially declared Mahama the winner on December 9, securing 6,328,397 votes, which accounted for 56.55% of valid votes cast. His closest contender, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), received 4,657,304 votes, representing 41.61%.
In addition to congratulating Mahama, the U.S. applauded Vice President-elect Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang for her historic achievement as Ghana’s first female vice president. The statement also commended Ghana’s poll workers, civil society organizations, and security forces for ensuring a peaceful and transparent electoral process.
Acknowledging reports of isolated violence, including four confirmed deaths, the U.S. expressed condolences to the affected families and called for thorough investigations to ensure accountability.
Reaffirming its longstanding partnership with Ghana, the United States emphasized its commitment to supporting democratic governance and shared values of peace and development. Secretary Blinken remarked, “We look forward to working closely with President-elect Mahama to strengthen our historic relationship and advance mutual goals.”
