The United Kingdom is set to deploy Royal Navy ships and surveillance aircraft to the eastern Mediterranean to provide support to Israel, according to an announcement from 10 Downing Street. The deployment aims to track potential threats to regional stability, including the transfer of weapons to terrorist groups. The comprehensive assistance package includes surveillance assets, helicopters, P8 aircraft, and a contingent of marines. Chancellor Rishi Sunak emphasized that this military support is intended to prevent further escalation of the conflict.

The British armed forces will remain on standby, ready to offer practical support to Israel and its regional partners. They will also play a role in providing deterrence and assurance, as stated by Downing Street. In the coming week, a Royal Navy task group will be moved to the region to support humanitarian efforts.

The situation in the region has escalated dramatically following an unprecedented attack by Hamas on southern Israel, resulting in over 1,300 casualties and the taking of hostages in Gaza. Israel, in response, has carried out retaliatory air strikes, resulting in further casualties in Gaza.
