The University of Ghana (UG) has dismissed claims circulating on social media that it collected over GHS11 million in graduation fees without providing medallions and scroll holders.
In a statement issued on Monday, February 17, UG’s Public Affairs Directorate refuted a report by Joy News and Joy 99.7 FM, calling it misleading and inaccurate.
According to the university, the total graduation fee collected was GHS7,888,000—not GHS11 million as alleged. Each of the 15,776 expected graduands paid GHS500, covering essential services such as gown rental, congregation publications, graduation medallions, scroll holders, university souvenirs, water, and administrative costs.
UG acknowledged that while all listed items were included in the package, procurement delays affected the distribution of medallions and scroll holders. A notice issued on February 10, 2025, had already informed graduands of the delay, assuring them that the missing items would be made available soon.
“It is, therefore, unfortunate for JoyNews to put out a sensational story without recourse to readily available facts. We urge the public to disregard these misleading reports and rely on official University communications for accurate information,” the statement read.
The University of Ghana reaffirmed its commitment to upholding high standards in organizing graduation ceremonies and assured graduands that all outstanding items would be provided as soon as possible.
