Students at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) have lauded Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang’s historic elevation as Ghana’s first female Vice President, heralding it as a transformative milestone for women in the country.
Many students view her achievement as a reflection of her steadfast dedication to education, leadership, and public service. They believe her rise also underscores UCC’s prominence as a leading academic institution in Ghana and West Africa, affirmed by its recognition in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
Ms. Mavis Williams Esuon expressed joy over Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s accomplishment, acknowledging her resilience despite personal voting choices: “I take pride in Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s affiliation with UCC, as we are recognised as the premier institution in Ghana.”
Ms. Emmanuela Kwofie highlighted the significance of Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s appointment, emphasizing its role in empowering women: “Her integrity, dedication, and vision for a prosperous Ghana will be evident in the years to come.”
Mr. Solomon Okine, a biological sciences student, praised her as a figure of integrity and inclusivity, confident in her ability to advance women’s leadership and national development.
A Senior Lecturer commended her achievement as an inspiration to women and a call for men to support gender inclusivity. Additionally, the lecturer lauded President John Dramani Mahama for retaining her as the running mate for the 2024 elections, expressing confidence in her ability to excel as Vice President.
Within the English Department, her former colleagues and students recalled her rigorous teaching methods and emphasis on academic excellence. One former student fondly quoted her advice: “If you have the potential to attain an ‘A’ grade, then that should be your goal. Settling for a ‘B+’ should not suffice.”
