Tyrone Iras Marhguy Receives Full Scholarship to Study at University of Pennsylvania

Tyrone Iras Marhguy, a former Rastafarian student from Achimota Secondary School who made headlines for his battle to keep his dreadlocks while attending school, has received a full scholarship to study Computer Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania in the United States.

Marhguy shared his achievement on social media on Wednesday, August 28, expressing his excitement and gratitude. He also revealed that he had received scholarship offers from three other universities, with the total value of the offers amounting to $1.4 million over the next four years.

In his post, Marhguy stated, “I’m thrilled to announce that I’ve been awarded a full scholarship to pursue Computer Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania. Joining the class of 2028 as a proud Quaker, this incredible opportunity comes after carefully considering breathtaking offers from UPenn, Duke, Williams, and F&M, all totaling $1.4 million over the next four years!”

Marhguy became a national figure after Achimota School denied him admission due to his dreadlocks, citing school guidelines. The issue sparked widespread debate and led to a legal battle, resulting in a court ruling on May 31, 2021, that ordered the school to admit Marhguy and another Rastafarian student, Oheneba Nkrabea.

In 2023, Marhguy excelled in his final WASSCE exams, earning straight 8A’s, which paved the way for him to take the SAT exams and apply to universities abroad.

Reflecting on his journey, Marhguy expressed deep appreciation for his family, especially his father, Tereo Marhguy, and his mother, Dorcas Fremarhguy, as well as his sisters, Amrita and Nikita Marhguy, for their unwavering support. He also thanked Mr. Ekow Aikins Jnr of Aikins Educational Consult for preparing him for the SAT and guiding him through the college application process, and Mr. Ferdinand Quayson and Mr. Abel Ohene Acquaye for their mentorship and support.
