Two shot dead, one critically injured in broad daylight shooting at Sawla

Two people have been confirmed dead while another victim is fighting for his life following a shooting incident in Gbeniyiri in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District.

The Ghana Police Service confirmed the incident to Joy News, stating that the victims were shot at close range in broad daylight on Thursday, March 5, 2026.

According to the police, the attack was carried out by an unidentified gunman in the Gbeniyiri township. Two of the victims died from the gunshot wounds, while a third person remains in critical condition at the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District Hospital.

Authorities say no arrests have been made so far, and the motive behind the shooting remains unclear.

Meanwhile, the Savannah Regional Security Council, led by regional minister Saulisu Be-Awuribe, is expected to visit the community to assess the situation and determine the circumstances surrounding the attack.

The incident comes at a time when efforts are ongoing to address tensions in the area. A Presidential Mediation Committee chaired by Emmanuel Bombande recently submitted recommendations to John Dramani Mahama aimed at achieving a lasting resolution to the conflict affecting the area.

Community leaders had also recently performed a spiritual purification ceremony as part of traditional efforts to restore peace.

The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District Hospital morgue as investigations continue.
