Two More Democracy Hub Protesters Arrested

Two protesters from the Democracy Hub were arrested on the third day of ongoing protests in Accra on Monday, September 23, 2024. The men, who had been standing near the 37 Lorry Station for over an hour, boldly stepped in front of the police while holding placards condemning illegal mining, locally known as “galamsey.” Their act of defiance resulted in their immediate arrest, raising the total number of detained protesters over the three days to 44.

The Democracy Hub’s protests initially began as a demonstration against the rising cost of living and economic challenges but shifted focus to address illegal mining activities, which have been devastating water bodies and the environment in Ghana.

Despite the arrests, the protesters remain resolute, declaring that even if only a few remain, they will continue to stand against illegal mining.

The protests have garnered public attention, with many citizens urging the government to intervene and take action to protect the country’s natural resources.
