Two high-ranking officials in the Bono Region narrowly avoided a fatal outcome during a robbery on the Berekum-Drobo highway at Fetentaa.
Reports from the Ghana News Agency (GNA) indicate that Mr. Andrews Bediako, Municipal Chief Executive of Jaman South, and Mr. Solomon Owusu, District Chief Executive of Jaman North, were returning from a meeting in Sunyani to their respective districts when they encountered armed robbers.
Recounting the harrowing experience to the GNA, Mr. Bediako stated that the incident occurred on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, between 4:30 PM and 5:00 PM.
According to Mr. Bediako, about five heavily armed robbers had ambushed market women and traders traveling from Drobo and Sampa to Berekum and Sunyani at the Fetentaa segment of the highway, near the Fetentaa Refugee camp in the Berekum West District.
“They emerged from the side of the road, fired shots randomly, and signaled us to halt. They even smashed my windshield with a piece of wood, but we managed to escape the horrific scene,” he narrated.
During the attack, the engine of Mr. Owusu’s vehicle malfunctioned, but both officials managed to leave the scene unharmed.
“We immediately alerted the police and warned approaching vehicles. Realizing the threat, the robbers retreated into the bush,” Mr. Bediako added.
