The Trades Union Congress (TUC) is intensifying pressure on the government to revoke Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2462, which permits mining activities in forest reserves.
Speaking on Channel One Newsroom on Thursday, May 1, TUC Chairman Bernard Owusu emphasized that amending the law is not enough, insisting on a complete repeal. “We are still asking government to go to Parliament to revoke that L.I. We’ve heard that government is trying to amend it, but that is not what we demanded for,” he stated firmly.
L.I. 2462 has come under heavy scrutiny from environmentalists and civil society groups who argue that it contributes to the environmental degradation caused by illegal mining (galamsey) in Ghana’s protected areas.
Amid growing public discontent, reports suggest that the controversial instrument is likely to be repealed once Parliament reconvenes from recess, marking a potential victory for environmental advocates and labour unions.
