Patients seeking medical care at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) on Thursday, April 24, 2025, were left frustrated and confused as consulting rooms remained empty following a strike action by doctors.
The Doctors’ Association of Tamale Teaching Hospital (DATTH) announced an indefinite suspension of all emergency and outpatient services, including general OPD, antenatal, paediatrics, and specialist clinics. The decision, made during an emergency general assembly meeting on April 23, was in response to what they described as “unwarranted attacks” by Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh and Tamale North MP Alhassan Suhuyini.
This industrial action follows a widely criticized incident during the Minister’s unannounced visit to the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit on April 22, during which tensions flared between officials and medical personnel.
In a statement, the doctors expressed deep concern over the treatment of staff and the dismissal of the hospital’s CEO, Dr. Adam Atiku, calling it a breach of due process and an assault on professional integrity.
