Tragic Petrol Tanker Explosion in Nigeria Claims 147 Lives

A devastating petrol tanker explosion occurred early on October 16, 2024, in Majiya town, Taura Local Government Area, Jigawa State, resulting in the deaths of at least 147 individuals, with many others hospitalized. The local chairman, Shuaibu Hambali, reported that around 72 people sustained injuries during the incident.

The explosion took place around 12:30 AM when the tanker driver lost control while traveling from Kano to Nguru, near Khadija University. Eyewitnesses described a scene filled with chaos as people desperately attempted to rescue those trapped in the flames. One survivor, Sani Umar, recounted the horrifying moments, saying, “It was terrifying. People were running in all directions, screaming for help.”

According to DSP Lawan Adam, the Police Public Relations Officer of Jigawa State Command, the explosion was exacerbated by residents who rushed to collect spilled petrol from the overturned tanker. He confirmed that 94 people died on the spot, while an additional 50 were severely injured and taken to Ringim and Hadejia General Hospitals.

In response to the tragedy, authorities commenced mass burials for the victims. The Commissioner of Police, AT Abdullahi, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased, emphasizing the need for public awareness regarding the dangers of collecting fuel from accident scenes.

Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State visited the explosion site, offering condolences to the victims’ families and pledging to cover the hospital bills of the injured. President Bola Tinubu also responded by sending a high-level delegation to assess the situation and provide assistance to those affected.

The Federal Government announced plans to offer emergency aid, including medical supplies, food, and shelter for the victims. President Tinubu expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families affected, urging improved safety protocols for fuel transportation across Nigeria.

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum expressed sorrow over the incident, stressing the importance of safety measures in handling combustible materials. The Senate observed a minute of silence in honor of the deceased and called for relief materials for the victims.

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, has instructed the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority to investigate the circumstances of the explosion. He reiterated the importance of adhering to safety protocols while transporting petroleum products.

The Minister’s statement cautioned citizens against approaching vehicles involved in accidents, highlighting the risks associated with collecting spilled fuel.
