Tony Aubynn Sues Paul Adom-Otchere for Defamation, Seeks GH¢30 Million in Damages

Dr. Tony Aubynn, former Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission, has filed a defamation lawsuit against Paul Adom-Otchere, host of *Good Evening Ghana*, and Ignite Media Group. The civil suit, filed on November 26, 2024, in the High Court in Accra, seeks GH¢30 million in general damages for alleged defamatory remarks made against Dr. Aubynn.

Currently the Abakoma-Akyempimhene of the Damang-Wassa Division in the Western Region, Dr. Aubynn claims that the statements made by Mr. Adom-Otchere were intended to harm his reputation and portray him as dishonest, corrupt, and unpatriotic. He argues that these comments have exposed him to public ridicule and contempt.

Dr. Aubynn is requesting a retraction and an unqualified apology from the defendants, to be issued on the same media platforms used to disseminate the alleged defamatory remarks. Additionally, he is seeking a perpetual injunction to prevent further publication of similar statements.

In his statement of claim, Dr. Aubynn asserts that the defendants knowingly and recklessly made false allegations, failing to verify the information or consult him directly to confirm the claims. He alleges that the remarks were designed to generate negative public sentiment against him.

The plaintiff is also seeking punitive and exemplary damages of GH¢10 million, arguing that the defendants acted with malice to maximize the harm to his reputation.
