The Culture and Democracy of Ghana are Supreme, and I Will do Everything Legally Possible to Safeguard Them – Alban Bagbin

Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, has declared his commitment to protect Ghana’s democracy from any attempts by the government to undermine it. He issued a strong warning against actions that could jeopardize the sovereignty of Ghanaians during his tenure as Speaker.

Bagbin’s statement was prompted by a letter from President Akufo-Addo, dated March 18, 2024, directing Parliament not to send the anti-gay bill for his approval.

In a Facebook post, Bagbin criticized the President, stating, “The Parliament of Ghana under my leadership will resist any affront on the democracy of Ghana. We will not allow a government to undermine the sovereign will of the people expressed through their representatives.”

He emphasized the importance of preserving Ghana’s cultural heritage and restoring aspects lost to historical oppression. Bagbin highlighted that the current generation has a responsibility to protect and revive cultural values that have been eroded by colonialism and the slave trade.

“The culture and democracy of Ghana are supreme, and I will do everything legally possible to safeguard them,” Bagbin asserted.

Bagbin also called on President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to avoid trivializing democratic processes.

“We at the Parliament House thank all Ghanaians for speaking out loudly on this matter and speaking truth to the government. God bless our homeland Ghana,” Bagbin concluded.
