A Tesla Cybertruck exploded outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas on Wednesday morning, killing the driver and injuring seven others. The FBI is investigating whether the incident, which occurred just weeks before President-elect Donald Trump’s return to the White House, was an act of terrorism.
Eyewitness videos captured the shocking moment the Cybertruck erupted in flames near the hotel’s entrance. Authorities have reported that the vehicle, which was rented in Colorado, started smoking before the explosion. Early reports suggest fireworks may have been loaded in the vehicle, though investigations are ongoing.
Sheriff Kevin McMahill of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department acknowledged the significance of the incident’s location and vehicle involved. “Obviously, a Cybertruck, the Trump hotel – there are lots of questions that we have to answer,” McMahill stated during a press briefing.
FBI special agent Jeremy Schwartz emphasized that determining whether the explosion was a terrorist act remains a priority. “We’re working to understand if this was intentional or accidental,” Schwartz said, adding that the driver’s identity has been established but is yet to be disclosed.
The explosion comes on the heels of another tragic incident in New Orleans, where a man drove a truck into New Year’s Day crowds, killing 15 people.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk, a key supporter of Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign and an adviser to the incoming administration, has yet to comment on the incident.
