Meet Tayleb Willis , The Sensational Australian Born Ghanaian Who Is Australia’s 3rd Fastest Junior Of All Time 110m Hurdles

Tayleb Willis, Born on 18th March 2003 is an Australian athlete (hurdles) of Ghanian descent.  He grew up in the capital and most populous city in Australia, Melbourne.  Born to Isaac Williams and Christine Willis in Australia,  the gifted athlete is yet to visit Ghana where his father hails from.

 

World Hurdles Record Holder, Tayleb Willis At 8years

At an early age of 8years, Tayleb Willis started his athletics journey at the Yarra Ranges Athletics  Club in the Eastern Metropolitan Region of Melbourne  In Australia.

“As a young athlete, I enjoyed playing other sports as a kid. I played AFL football for 4 years at the Kilsyth cougars football club in Melbourne. My Short football career was a success as I won league best&fairest in U14 boys in 2016” – He said.

He also qualified for the inter-league competitions and won multiple clubs’ best and fairest awards in Australia. Tayleb who took after his sister’s steps in athletics said,” My sister Lateisha Willis set the bar high for my family as she won multiple national titles in hurdles when she was younger which motivated me to follow in her footsteps”. He added that” My other siblings and I continued the sports tradition by playing gymnastics at a young age which gave Me the flexibility for my hurdling success today

Some outstanding  Australian records of the young gifted athlete include,

  •  3rd the fastest junior of all time in the 110mhurdles in Australian athletics history
  • he was ranked first in the world for U18 110mhurdles during 2020
  • And is now currently ranked 1st in the world for U20 110mhurdles
  • He was also selected to represent Australia in the World U20 championships in Kenya
  • 5 x National champion (Australia)
  • U20 national meet record holder(Australia)
  • he has made 12 x state records (Australia)

He confessed that his only challenge was Covid19 since it prevented him from participating in the World under 20 championships in Kenya.

The challenges that I have faced recently is mainly coronavirus. I have missed out on two national championships due to coronavirus! All last season my goal was to qualify for the world u20 championships in Nairobi, Kenya in August this year.

I worked very hard to reach that goal which I gained 3 qualifiers and got selected to represent Australia in the championships but due to coronavirus and safety security Australia decided not to send a team which was devastating instead they decided to send the team to Goldcoast, Australia to compete in the Oceania championships which took place in June which I was one of two athletes that made the world team that missed out on competing due to being in lockdown in Melbourne and Queensland closing there borders”

 

As part of his plans to tour the world, Tayleb wants to visit his father’s family here in Ghana in the future to reconcile with his roots and explore opportunities to help other hurdlers in Ghana become the best they could ever be to compete in international competitions.
