Some casual workers at the Northern Regional Hospital, also known as Tamale Central Hospital, have embarked on a sit-down strike over five months of unpaid salaries.

The industrial action is already affecting sanitation at the facility, with poor waste management reported across several wards, including the children’s, male, and maternity wards.

According to Adam Sulemana Baba, Secretary of the orderlies, the workers have resolved not to return to duty until their outstanding salaries are paid.

He explained that many of the workers have served as casual staff for nearly 15 years but are now struggling to meet basic needs due to the prolonged delay in payments.

A visit to the hospital revealed overflowing bins and unhygienic washroom conditions, raising concerns among patients and health workers about potential health risks.

The workers say they had earlier engaged management, including during the Ramadan period, to address the issue, but no resolution has been reached.

The strike highlights ongoing challenges facing casual workers in Ghana’s health sector, particularly regarding job security and timely remuneration.
