Renowned Ghanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama has alleged that he was assaulted by individuals believed to be members of the Ghana Police Service Special Operations Team, popularly known as “Black Maria,” in Tamale.
Mahama, founder of the Savannah Centre for Contemporary Art (SCCA) and Red Clay Studio, reportedly sustained dental injuries, including the loss of a tooth, during the incident. His uncle, who was driving at the time, also suffered injuries.
He has since received treatment at Habana Hospital and is expected to undergo further dental care due to damage to two of his teeth.
According to Mahama, the incident occurred during a traffic situation linked to Eid prayers near the Mariam Hotel. He alleged that the individuals involved were part of the “Black Maria” team, reportedly redeployed to the region.
However, the unit has denied any involvement. Bawah Abdul Jalil, Commander of the IGP Special Operations Team, stated that although his officers were in Tamale for Eid al-Fitr celebrations, they were not involved in the alleged assault.
The incident has sparked concern, with calls for clarity and accountability as investigations continue.
