President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to construct a new runway at Sunyani Airport to accommodate larger aircraft and enhance air connectivity in the Bono Region.

The proposed expansion is expected to significantly improve air travel to and from Sunyani, while boosting economic activity by enabling commercial flights operated by bigger aircraft.

Speaking during his Resetting Ghana Tour in Sunyani on Thursday, March 19, 2026, Mahama indicated that the current airport infrastructure is inadequate, particularly the runway, which cannot support jet operations.

“The old Sunyani Airport has stalled. The runway is only about 1.5 kilometres. Because of that, planes that can land in Kumasi cannot come here,” he stated.

According to the President, attempts to expand the existing runway have proven impractical due to surrounding developments.

“That requires that we expand the runway, but because of the buildings in the area, we may not be able to work on it. So, we decided to build a new runway for the airport,” he explained.

Mahama disclosed that traditional authorities in the area have already released land for the project, paving the way for construction to begin.

The new runway is expected to measure approximately 2.4 kilometres, making it capable of accommodating larger and more advanced aircraft.

“The chiefs have already given out lands for that. The design exists, and the new runway will be about 2.4 kilometres to be able to land any plane of any size,” he added.

The President further noted that government will return at the appropriate time to officially cut sod for the commencement of the project.

The expansion of Sunyani Airport is expected to improve regional connectivity, facilitate trade, and attract investment into the Bono Region, positioning the area as a growing hub for business and tourism.
