The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has rejected proposals from individuals and companies seeking to secure feeding contracts for Ghana’s delegation to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, citing concerns over cost and transparency.

Speaking on a television programme, the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, explained that the decision forms part of broader efforts to ensure prudent management of public funds ahead of the tournament.

According to him, although the government plans to support approximately 800 Ghanaian fans to attend the competition, the high cost per individual has influenced the ministry’s spending approach.

He revealed that each supporter is expected to cost about $9,250, with government covering airfare, accommodation, and local transportation. However, beneficiaries will be responsible for their own visa fees and feeding expenses during the tournament.

The Minister noted that awarding catering contracts could create opportunities for mismanagement or unnecessary expenditure, hence the decision to eliminate such arrangements entirely.

He emphasised that the move is aimed at promoting accountability while still enabling Ghanaian supporters to participate in the global event.

The announcement comes as preparations intensify for Ghana’s participation in the World Cup, with authorities seeking to balance fan support with fiscal responsibility.
