The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has officially inaugurated a seven-member Committee of Enquiry to investigate the untimely death of Nigerian boxer, Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju.
Gabriel collapsed during a boxing match held at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra on March 29, 2025. He was later pronounced dead at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
The committee is chaired by Ambassador Major (Rtd.) Amarkai Amarteifio and includes the following members:
- Peter Zwennes Esq.
- Ekow Asmah
- Samuel Bartels Esq.
- Eddie Pappoe
- Juliana Addo-Yobo Esq.
- Martin Engmann
Speaking at the inauguration on Tuesday, April 8, Kofi Adams emphasized that the incident was too significant to be ignored and called for a thorough investigation.
He stated that the committee, which has been given 21 days to submit its findings, will not only examine the events surrounding the boxer’s death but will also delve into broader regulatory and medical standards in Ghana’s boxing industry, especially concerning international matches.
Terms of Reference for the Committee:
- Determine the circumstances that led to the death of Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju on March 29, 2025.
- Assess whether the organizers and promoters of the bout adhered to international safety standards to prevent such a tragedy.
- Examine whether the Nigerian licensing authorities acted appropriately in allowing the boxer to participate in the international bout based on his experience and qualifications.
- Review the actions of all officials involved and recommend sanctions where necessary.
- Suggest improvements to technical and medical protocols to ensure safety in the sport.
- Consider any other relevant matters and make recommendations to protect participants and uphold the image of boxing.
The Ministry has expressed its commitment to ensuring such incidents do not recur and that the sport remains safe and respected.
