The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has suspended four Members of Parliament (MPs) for two weeks following the chaotic scenes that disrupted Thursday’s Appointments Committee session.

The suspended MPs include Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor (Majority Chief Whip), Frank Annoh-Dompreh (Minority Chief Whip), Alhassan Sulemana Tampuli (Gushegu MP), and Jerry Ahmed Shaib (Weija-Gbawe MP).

Announcing the decision on Friday, Speaker Bagbin condemned the disorderly conduct, describing it as unbecoming of MPs and a disgrace to the institution of Parliament.

“The actions of these MPs during the vetting session brought shame to this arm of government. Such behaviour will not be tolerated under my watch,” Bagbin stated.

The Speaker has directed the Parliamentary Marshal to ensure that the suspended MPs do not access the chamber during their suspension.

The disruption occurred during the vetting of nominees Kwabena Mintah Akandoh and Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, as disagreements between the Majority and Minority over scheduling escalated into chaos.

Bagbin emphasized that the suspension was aimed at restoring discipline and order in parliamentary proceedings, warning that further incidents would attract harsher penalties.

The suspension is a rare punitive action in Parliament, reflecting the seriousness of the incident and its implications for the decorum of legislative work.
