Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has directed an investigation into derogatory comments made against Dr. Zanetor Rawlings, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Korle-Klottey, during a heated parliamentary session on February 4, 2025.
The incident occurred when a male voice was heard shouting, “Daughter of a murderer, sit down! Daughter of a murderer, sit down!” while Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin was addressing the House and calling for calm.
The outburst took place amid tense discussions surrounding the 60th anniversary of the death of Joseph Boakye Danquah. Tamale Central MP, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, had challenged what he described as exaggerated accolades from the Minority regarding JB Danquah’s legacy. As the exchange intensified, the presiding Speaker, Andrew Asiamah, limited contributions to only parliamentary leadership, silencing other MPs.
In a formal address on March 3, Speaker Bagbin expressed regret over the incident and issued an ultimatum to the unidentified culprit to come forward within a week or face consequences.
“It is regrettable that an Hon. Member was subjected to an unwarranted, unjustified, and deeply offensive reckless remark. Such conduct is dishonourable, and I strongly condemn it as behaviour unbefitting of a sitting MP,” Bagbin stated.
He also extended a heartfelt apology to Dr. Zanetor Rawlings, her mother, former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings, and the people of Anlo.
The investigation is expected to identify the source of the comment and ensure accountability. Parliamentarians and the public alike are.
