South African Gospel Singer Kelly Khumalo Accused of Ordering the Murder of Her Boyfriend

In a shocking revelation at the Gauteng High Court, lead investigator Bongani Gininda stated that South African gospel singer Kelly Khumalo is accused of ordering the murder of her then-boyfriend, football star Senzo Meyiwa. Meyiwa was fatally shot in 2014 while attempting to protect Khumalo from armed robbers. The trial, which has captured the nation’s attention, has seen five suspects arrested in 2020.

Gininda informed the court on Wednesday that Khumalo is alleged to have organized a “contractual assassination or hit” on Meyiwa. The singer’s spokesperson expressed trust in the legal process, noting that Khumalo couldn’t comment at this time, but her legal team is actively addressing the situation.

The suspicion of Khumalo’s involvement arose in 2020 when police documents were leaked following the suspects’ arrests. According to Gininda, one of the suspects confessed that Khumalo provided instructions for Meyiwa’s murder. Cell phone linkages further connected Khumalo to the suspects, as revealed by the lead investigator.

Colonel Lambertus Steyn from the National Cold Case Investigation Unit testified last year that Khumalo had been in contact with one of the accused at least twice before Meyiwa’s murder. Additionally, a photograph of money found on Khumalo’s phone matched an image on one of the suspect’s phones.

The court is currently deliberating on the admissibility of the confession statements, with two suspects claiming they were made under duress. Despite having a child together, Gininda stated that Khumalo and Meyiwa had fallen out, noting that she “hated him and wanted to get rid of him.” Communication records between Khumalo and her sister from early 2013 allegedly indicate her desire to depose of Meyiwa.
