Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML) has taken legal action against the Fourth Estate and journalist Manasseh Awuni for defamation, following the broadcast of what SML claims to be a false report titled the ‘GH¢3 billion lie report’. The company is seeking damages amounting to GHS 10 million.
According to the lawsuit, SML asserts that the negative public backlash resulting from the defendants’ alleged false reportage has significantly affected its operations. Despite issuing rejoinders to counter the alleged misinformation, SML claims that the defendants have failed to retract or apologize for their purportedly inaccurate coverage.
The contentious report by the Fourth Estate raised concerns over a purported 10-year contract between SML and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), with an annual payment of $100 million. Subsequently, President Akufo-Addo ordered the suspension and audit of the contract, appointing accounting firm KPMG to conduct the investigation.
In response to the presidential directive, SML expressed its support for the suspension of the contract, emphasizing its commitment to transparency and welcoming the audit as an opportunity to validate the integrity of its collaboration with GRA and the Ministry of Finance.
The management of SML expressed confidence that the audit findings would vindicate the company, affirming its adherence to high business standards and its dedication to providing value to citizens.
