Six illegal miners have been confirmed dead following the collapse of a galamsey pit at Kasotie in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region.

The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday night, trapping several miners underground. Rescue operations, led by the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in collaboration with emergency services and local volunteers, are still ongoing amid fears that more miners remain trapped.

After hours of digging, rescue teams managed to retrieve the bodies of six victims. Four others were pulled out alive and rushed to the hospital for urgent treatment. The deceased have since been sent to the morgue.

Rescue efforts have been severely hampered by water seeping into the collapsed pit, slowing down the pace of recovery.

Assembly Member for the Kasotie Electoral Area, Samuel Ayine, confirmed the incident and appealed for additional support to expedite the rescue mission.

The disaster adds to the growing concerns about the dangers of illegal mining activities in Ghana, which continue to claim lives despite government interventions.
