Six Arrested in Ahanta West for Allegedly Burning 60-Year-Old Man to Death

The Ahanta West Municipal Police Command has apprehended six individuals in connection with the death of 60-year-old Isaac Ansah, who was burned alive in Achonwa, a town in the Ahanta West Municipality of the Western Region.

The tragic incident occurred on Thursday, June 27, 2024, following a mob action sparked by accusations from a local fetish priest. The priest alleged that Isaac Ansah had provided him with the names of 14 community members for ritual killings.

Isaac Ansah had been serving a banishment of over two years from the community due to previous allegations of causing a resident’s death through spiritual means.

Frank Eshun, the nephew of the deceased, recounted the incident to Channel One News. He identified the arrested individuals as the Caretaker Chief of the community, Nana Ojandi, the Assemblyman Godfred Cudjoe, the Fetish Priest, the Chief Fisherman, and two others.

Eshun explained that the mob action followed an inconclusive meeting between the elders of the town and his uncle. “The Chief (Caretaker Chief) and the Assemblyman organized a grand durbar to decide what to do with my uncle. They also called the Fetish Priest to narrate his accusations. My uncle explained that the names he gave to the Fetish Priest were meant to plead for his return to the community, not for any harm. However, the residents did not believe him and, in a rage, captured, tied, stoned, and burned him with used car tyres and petrol,” Eshun detailed.

Eshun described the family’s devastation and called for justice. “It’s painful. Seeing my uncle’s remains being eaten by dogs and birds was unbearable. We need those responsible to be prosecuted because no one should take the law into their own hands. We plead with the state to ensure justice is served,” he urged.

The remains of Isaac Ansah have been sent to the mortuary for an autopsy.
