SIM re-registration will not cost taxpayers – Sam George

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, , has assured Ghanaians that the upcoming SIM card re-registration exercise will not place any financial burden on taxpayers.

Speaking in an interview with on Channel One TV’s Face to Face programme, the Minister explained that the government has taken steps to ensure the process is fully funded without public expenditure.

According to him, the Ministry has already communicated to the that the exercise will come at no cost to the state.

He added that approval from the Finance Ministry for both the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) and the SIM registration platform was granted on the condition that the initiative would not be funded by taxpayers.

To achieve this, the government has engaged telecommunications companies, which are expected to bear the cost of the exercise.

Mr. George further emphasised that the process will be conducted competitively, assuring that it will not be awarded through sole-sourcing.

The announcement comes amid ongoing discussions about the need for a new SIM re-registration process, aimed at improving regulatory oversight and security within Ghana’s telecommunications sector.
