The next phase of Ghana’s SIM card re-registration exercise is set to begin in June 2025 with a fully digital process aimed at eliminating long queues and easing the burden on citizens.
Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Sam Nartey George, announced the new development during a visit to Margins ID Group (Intelligent Card Production Systems) in Accra on Tuesday, April 8.
He explained that the updated process will allow users to re-register their SIM cards online, with the system automatically verifying their details. This move is expected to cut down manual processing time and enhance accuracy.
The transition to a digital system is designed to make registration faster and more convenient, improving the overall user experience.
Ghana’s SIM card re-registration began in 2021 and has seen multiple deadline extensions due to low participation. The process requires users to re-register their SIMs using the Ghana Card, the country’s official national ID.
Despite efforts to increase compliance, millions of SIM cards have yet to be re-registered. This has led to concerns over data security and potential misuse of mobile registration apps.
The government says the re-registration is crucial for strengthening national security, reducing fraudulent SIM-based activities, and ensuring better regulation through accurate subscriber data.
