Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, was an avid football fan and lifelong supporter of Argentine club San Lorenzo. He became the 266th leader of the Roman Catholic Church in 2013.

Several Serie A clubs paid tribute to the late pontiff. AS Roma described his death as “a loss that deeply saddens our city and the entire world,” and praised his humility, courage, and spiritual leadership.
