Italy’s top football division, Serie A, has postponed four matches scheduled for Easter Monday following the death of Pope Francis.
The Vatican confirmed the Pope’s passing early Monday morning at the age of 88 after a prolonged battle with an infection. His death has prompted a wave of mourning across the Catholic world and beyond.
The affected fixtures include Torino vs Udinese, Cagliari vs Fiorentina, Genoa vs Lazio, and Parma vs Juventus. The Lega Serie A has announced that new dates will be communicated soon.
Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, was an avid football fan and lifelong supporter of Argentine club San Lorenzo. He became the 266th leader of the Roman Catholic Church in 2013.
Several Serie A clubs paid tribute to the late pontiff. AS Roma described his death as “a loss that deeply saddens our city and the entire world,” and praised his humility, courage, and spiritual leadership.
