Twenty-two of the 50 fishermen stranded at sea following a violent armed attack near Senya Beraku have been rescued and safely returned to shore, as efforts continue to bring back the remaining victims.
The fishermen were retrieved from two separate boats after colleagues towed them ashore. Their outboard motors had reportedly been seized during the raid, leaving them immobile offshore.
Scenes at the landing site showed emotional reunions, with family members and community residents cheering and welcoming the rescued fishermen. In a traditional expression of relief and thanksgiving, white powder was poured over the men upon their arrival.
The attack occurred on Wednesday, February 25, during a night fishing expedition near Senya Beraku in the Awutu Senya District of the Central Region. Armed men reportedly fired multiple warning shots, held the fishermen at gunpoint, and made away with seven outboard motors, generators, and other valuables.
The Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya West, Gizella Tetteh, disclosed that four canoes had been dispatched to support rescue efforts.
In addition, the Ghana Armed Forces deployed a joint rescue team comprising Navy and Air Force personnel to assist in bringing the stranded fishermen back to safety.
Rescue operations remain ongoing as authorities work to ensure all affected fishermen are safely returned, while investigations continue into the attack.
