Sefwi-Wiawso Residents Demand Apology from Speaker Bagbin Over MP’s Ejection

On July 24, residents of the Sefwi-Wiawso constituency in the Western North Region held a protest against Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, insisting on an apology for his expulsion of their Member of Parliament, Dr. Kwaku Afriyie, from the parliamentary chamber.

The issue arose when Speaker Bagbin found some remarks made by Dr. Afriyie to be disrespectful and subsequently ordered him to leave the chamber.

Despite an apology offered by Majority Chief Whip Frank Annor-Dompreh on behalf of Dr. Afriyie, the MP stated that he had not authorized the apology and believed he had done nothing wrong.

In reaction, a group of residents, believed to be supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), organized a demonstration against Speaker Bagbin, calling his actions regrettable and disrespectful to both their MP and the people of Sefwi-Wiawso.

The residents have demanded an unconditional apology within one week, warning of further actions if their demand is not met.
