At least five people have been confirmed dead and six others injured following a violent land dispute at Gbiniyiri, a farming community in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District of the Savannah Region.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday, August 24, 2025, is reported to have been triggered by a disagreement over a parcel of land. Three of the injured victims are said to be in critical condition.
According to the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Sawla-Tuna-Kalba, **Sinkina Saaka**, the clash erupted after the local chief sold a piece of land to a private developer. Tensions flared when the developer attempted to enter the land to begin a project, but was resisted by some members of the community.
“It all started when the chief sold a piece of land to the developer some years ago. When the developer came to work on the land, the community members prevented him. The chief and his son later visited the community to ascertain the situation and were physically attacked,” Mr. Saaka explained.
Security was later reinforced in the area, with a joint team of police and military personnel deployed to restore calm.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing, while security remains on high alert to prevent further escalation.
