Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Sam Nartey George, has stated that recent investigations into public complaints about rapid data depletion reveal that users themselves—not telecom companies—are largely responsible for the high consumption.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Friday, August 1, the Minister disclosed that an operational task force was set up at the National Communications Authority (NCA), in collaboration with all mobile network operators (MNOs), to probe the growing concerns being raised across social media platforms.
“I have seen a number of complaints on social media and set up an operational task force at the NCA and all the MNOs to deal with these complaints,” Mr. George explained.
He emphasized that thorough investigations into each complaint found no evidence of data price manipulation or unauthorized deductions by telcos.
“To put on record, every single complaint that has been referred to the team has been investigated, and all of them have proven that it is user settings and user behaviours that have affected the use of their data. There has been no price tampering,” he stated.
Mr. George added that while the ministry remains committed to protecting consumers, any regulatory action must be based on verifiable evidence—not public speculation.
“I will not hesitate to deal decisively with any telco that alters the pricing that has been approved by the NCA. But unless there is evidence of the same, you cannot punish somebody just because people are making a claim that is not backed by evidence,” he said.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring transparency and consumer protection in the telecommunications sector, assuring that every complaint would continue to be thoroughly investigated.
