In Somanya, two individuals are currently fighting for their lives at the Yilo Krobo Municipal Hospital after sustaining gunshot wounds during a recent robbery at the Gaso fuel station on a fateful Monday.
Four assailants, one of them being a woman, launched a brazen attack on the fuel station situated in Ogome, a bustling suburban area in the municipality. This incident occurred just about 200 meters away from the SP GAS station, where a robbery incident had taken place a mere two weeks ago.
Eyewitnesses recounted that the armed perpetrators executed their operation with remarkable swiftness, making off with an undisclosed sum of money from the gas station’s attendants. On their way out, they also robbed a mobile money vendor located near the fuel station, absconding with a significant GH¢28,000 in cash.
In their haste to escape, the robbers fired multiple rounds of ammunition, leading to the injury of one of the fuel station’s attendants. In an attempt to discourage residents who attempted to intervene, the robbers fired indiscriminately, causing injuries to two other individuals.
One of the victims, who was promptly rushed to the Yilo Krobo Municipal Hospital, remains in a critical condition, while the other has been stabilized by the healthcare professionals at the facility. A third victim, who also sustained gunshot wounds, received medical treatment at the Somanya Poly Clinic and has since been discharged.
This most recent robbery, occurring within a span of less than two weeks, is sowing doubt among the residents of the Yilo Krobo Municipality concerning their safety and security. Many believe that the local police force lacks the essential resources required for effective day and night patrols.
Eric Tetteh, the Municipal Chief Executive for Yilo Krobo, confirmed the incident to Citi News. He disclosed that an emergency meeting would be convened with the Eastern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Twumasi Ankra, by the Municipal Security Council to discuss potential measures to address the rising security concerns in the area.
