The Minister of Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has directed the immediate closure of a critical bridge in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region due to its dangerously deteriorated condition. The bridge, which spans the Offin River, is a vital link for several communities, including Kotokuom and surrounding farming areas, providing access to urban centers for the transportation of agricultural produce.
The bridge’s structural integrity has been severely compromised by continuous use by heavy-duty trucks. Over time, the metal beams have become fragile, deep cracks have appeared on the surface, and the pillars at the edges are crumbling. These hazards pose a significant risk to motorists, particularly local farmers who rely on the bridge to move their produce to market.
For months, residents had raised alarms over the state of the bridge. When initial appeals for repair were met with inaction, some community members turned to social media to amplify their concerns. This digital advocacy caught the attention of President John Dramani Mahama, prompting him to instruct the Roads and Highways Minister to assess the situation and take immediate action.
Following the President’s directive, Minister Agbodza visited the site with engineers from the Ministry. After assessing the damage, he announced that the bridge would be closed and handed over to contractors for urgent repairs. The move is part of a broader commitment by the government to enhance road safety and maintain critical infrastructure.
While repair works are underway, the Ashanti Regional Security Council has advised motorists to use alternative routes. This measure is intended to ensure safety and minimize disruptions to transportation within the district.
