Residents in Tema Community 25 are urgently calling upon the Inspector General of Police (IGP), alongside the Ministries of Lands and Natural Resources, and Works and Housing, to intervene swiftly in preventing the encroachment upon land surrounding the Tema Community 25 District Police Headquarters.
Expressing their distress, the community residents emphasized that the Community Police Station, established through collective efforts, was intended for expansion, including plans for constructing a Police Barracks to accommodate stationed officers. However, concerns arose when it was discovered that the Tema Development Corporation (TDC) had allocated this crucial space to a private developer.
The abrupt commencement of construction by the private developer on the area slated for the Community Police Extension and Barracks prompted immediate action from the residents. Despite numerous appeals through formal letters to relevant institutions, including the TDC, no action has been taken to halt the ongoing development.
Residents took a stand against this encroachment by converging in red arm bands, mobilizing to obstruct the unauthorized development and covering the dug trenches, which were obstructing the Community Drainage System.
Voices from the community highlighted the unsuitability of developing land designated for vital security infrastructure like a Police Station, as well as other essential social amenities. Mr. Michael Kumah, an Executive Member of the Residents Association, emphasized that all remaining open spaces, crucial for recreation and emergency assembly points, have been sold off, underscoring the necessity to safeguard the remaining land for the community’s safety.
The Tema Community 25 Police District Headquarters plays a pivotal role in safeguarding not just the local communities in Tema and Kpone but also in protecting critical national installations such as the Kpone Thermal Plant. Residents adamantly assert that preserving the integrity of the Police Station is paramount for the community’s security and well-being.
