Read Full Text of Fmr President Mahama Speech on Election Declaration

The flagbearer of National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama held a press conference to express his displeasure about the presidential results declared by the EC.

Read full text of his speech from last night;

“I will not accept fictional results of a flawed elections.”

“We will not accept anything short of a declaration of the legitimate results which points to an NDC parliamentary majority.”

“There is no doubt Ghanaians voted for change.”

Accuses President Akufo-Addo of a desire to hold on to power, saying there “is a redetermined plan to manipulate the elections.”

Directly names the Electoral Commission as being in cahoots with the incumbent, cites “rigging and a calculated attempt to subvert the will of the people.”

“By the end of the election, [the NDC] had a working majority of 140 seats. There is a deliberate attempt to target 5 constituencies to subvert the will of the people.”

He goes on to name them, and provide the NDC’s side of events.

“The Ashanti Region provides fundamental problems that need to be investigated and a full scale audit.”

Also says prior to the elections there were many incidents where ballot papers already thumbprinted were found in various locations.

Repeatedly says President Akufo-Addo is “hungry for power”, accuses him of using state resources and the security services to thwart the process.

“My condolences to all those who were killed by those whose thirst for power outweighs their love for their country.”

“This is not a dictatorship or a monarchy or family for the benefit of a single family. Ghana belongs to the people of Ghana.”

He then observes a minute’s silence in honour of the 5 who have died, and wishes a speedy recovery to the 19 injured persons in election-related violence.

Calls on the media to be diligent, the international community “to engage and ensure that the right thing is done” and “to take careful note to the threat to our democracy.”

Tells the people of Ghana to be calm because “their cries for change will not go unheard”. And asks NDC supporters and those who voted for NDC to do same.

JM concludes with a promise of justice to prevail.

“I choose to be a determined optimist based on my own principles of faith.”

“We will take all legitimate steps to reverse this.
