Tyrone Marhguy, the young Rastafarian student previously denied admission to Achimota School due to his dreadlocks but later admitted following a court order, has attained remarkable success by securing two prestigious awards at the American Mathematics Olympiad 2023, showcasing outstanding academic prowess in Grade 12.
Marhguy, emerging as the 2023 overall national top scorer, clinched the coveted Gold medal among more than 150,000 global participants. Additionally, he attained the Silver category award in the Vanda Science International Olympiad, outperforming 38,000 test-takers. Recognizing his academic excellence, Marhguy was officially inducted into the International Junior Honour Society, 2023.
The esteemed awards ceremony, held on December 29, 2023, at the Chartered Institute of Bankers Hall in Accra, aimed to commend exceptional students, educators, and individuals in the educational realm for their contributions during the ATDP and Olympiad 2022 Academic Season.
Reflecting on his achievement, Marhguy expressed his excitement, stating, “It’s amazing and interesting to have the awards, it was science and some other stuff. I feel excited to have this opportunity to experience non-Ghanaian problem-solving.”
Earlier this month, on December 19, Marhguy demonstrated his academic brilliance by acing the West African Senior Secondary School Examinations (WASSCE), achieving an impressive 8 As.
This exceptional accomplishment follows a challenging journey marked by his well-publicized school admission rejection, sparking a nationwide discourse on discrimination. Ultimately, the legal victory obtained by Marhguy and his fellow students led to a landmark court decision, allowing their admission.
Marhguy’s success serves as a testament to his resilience and academic dedication, transcending barriers and shining brightly in the realm of education.
