Ghana has secured a landmark agreement with China, eliminating tariffs on all exports from Ghana to the Asian giant, in a move expected to significantly boost trade and economic growth.

The announcement was made by Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa via X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, describing the deal as a breakthrough in Ghana–China relations.

Under the new regime, 100% of Ghanaian exports will enter the Chinese market tariff-free, potentially increasing trade volumes, spurring job creation, and empowering Ghanaian businesses to expand internationally.

China is already Ghana’s largest trading partner, with bilateral trade surpassing $11 billion in 2024. The elimination of tariffs opens the door for Ghanaian producers, especially in agriculture and manufacturing, to access the world’s second-largest consumer market more competitively.

Beyond trade, Mr. Ablakwa revealed that both countries are intensifying cooperation in industrialization and infrastructure development. A central focus of discussions was the development of Ghana’s **estimated 900 million tonnes of bauxite reserves**, which will underpin an integrated aluminium industry supported by modern rail transport systems.

In addition, plans are underway for the establishment of an electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing plant in Ghana, leveraging the country’s newly confirmed strategic lithium deposits. These steps aim to position Ghana as a key player in the global green energy and tech manufacturing space.

To formalize and deepen the partnership, both nations are preparing to sign a comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, covering trade, industry, infrastructure, and technology.

Minister Ablakwa emphasized that these developments reflect the Mahama administration’s commitment to leveraging global diplomacy for national transformation.
