The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has summoned the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to an emergency meeting following widespread complaints about the rapid depletion of prepaid electricity units after the recent tariff adjustment under the Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO).
In a letter dated February 25, 2026, the Commission said it had taken note of media reports and consumer concerns alleging that prepaid units were running out faster than expected since the revised tariffs took effect.
The PURC indicated that the matter carries significant regulatory, technical, and consumer protection implications and could undermine public confidence in the country’s metering and vending systems.
The emergency meeting is scheduled for Thursday, February 26, 2026, at 12:00 noon at the PURC GNAT Office in Accra.
According to the Commission, discussions will focus on a comprehensive technical briefing regarding the implementation of the revised tariffs within the prepaid vending and metering architecture. ECG is also expected to present a report on any system parameter reviews, configuration adjustments, or conversion logic changes carried out in relation to the MYTO update.
Additionally, the power distributor will provide data on vending trends, meter update protocols, the nature and volume of consumer complaints, and measures currently in place to address the situation.
The Commission has further requested details on immediate technical and communication interventions required to protect consumer confidence and ensure regulatory compliance.
