PURC Orders ECG to Submit Load Management Timetable by April 2 Amidst Dumsor Challenges

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has instructed the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to submit a comprehensive load management timetable by April 2, 2024. This directive comes in response to the ongoing challenges faced by Ghanaians, including internet connectivity issues and disruptions in electricity supply, commonly referred to as “dumsor.”

Despite assurances from ECG that there is currently no need for a load-shedding timetable, the company has identified 630 overloaded transformers during peak hours as a key factor contributing to the crisis. These transformers, located in various operational areas, have exceeded their full capacity due to the increasing demand for electricity.

In a statement released on Monday, March 18, 2024, PURC outlined specific requirements for the load management timetable. These include providing ratings and current loadings of the overloaded distribution transformers, GPS locations of all overloaded distribution transformers, ratings of new transformers to be installed at each location, timelines and duration for the installation of transformers, a load management timetable corresponding with the installation timelines, and evidence of dissemination of this information to consumers.

The submission of this timetable is expected to provide clarity and transparency regarding the management of electricity supply amidst the current challenges. PURC has emphasized the importance of timely and accurate information dissemination to consumers to mitigate the impact of dumsor on households and businesses across the country.
