Supporters of the Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, commonly known as the anti-gay bill, are holding a protest today, Tuesday, October 8, to express their dissatisfaction with the delays in the bill’s final approval process.
The protest aims to urge the president to give immediate assent to the bill, which has been pending since Parliament passed it on February 28, 2024.
The delays have been exacerbated by a Supreme Court ruling on July 17, which postponed judgments on anti-gay cases until all related legal matters are resolved.
Speaking to Citi News, Samuel Nartey George, the bill’s lead advocate and Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, highlighted that the Chief Justice has the authority to expedite the resolution of the case if necessary.
“The Chief Justice has the power to require all parties involved to file within the stipulated timelines according to the Rules of Procedure, such as submitting a statement of claim within 14 days. This is all very clear, and the Chief Justice has the power to enforce it,” George stated.
He added, “If everyone takes a year to file their documents, it raises concerns about the proper delivery of justice. Justice delayed is justice denied, and ensuring the swift resolution of cases is essential for an effective justice system. The Chief Justice needs to take action.”
