“Professor Jane Opoku Agyemang will be my co-driver” – Mahama

Former President and Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. John Dramani Mahama, has announced that his Running Mate, Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, will serve as a co-driver in his government.

Speaking at a rally in Sandema, Builsa North Constituency, Mahama emphasized that Professor Opoku Agyemang will not be a mere assistant but an equal partner in governance. “We have the men and the women to be able to turn things around, and Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang is going to be my co-driver. She is not going to be my driver’s mate,” he said amid loud applause.

Mahama detailed the division of responsibilities, stating, “While I handle Defence, Interior, Finance, and those other Ministries, she will be handling Education, Health, Gender Protection, and we will work together.”

He underscored that the selection of Professor Opoku Agyemang as his Running Mate is a testament to her qualifications and capabilities, not merely her gender. “We are not making her Vice President because she is a woman. We are making her Vice President because she is qualified,” Mahama stated, highlighting her achievements as the first Vice-Chancellor of a Public University and former Minister of Education.

Mahama noted her significant contributions during her tenure, including providing free textbooks to all basic school children, eliminating over 2000 schools under trees, and initiating the E-Block schools.

Addressing durbars and rallies in Yagaba-Kubore in the North East Region and Fumbisi in the Builsa South Constituency, Mahama conveyed his confidence in Professor Opoku Agyemang’s ability to inspire and lead. “This is a capable woman. She is capable of being Vice President and she will make the women of Ghana proud,” he said.

Mahama assured that, if elected, his government would reset the country’s economic fortunes and continue the NDC’s legacy of infrastructure development. He pledged to finish abandoned projects, extend electricity to communities, and construct the Chuchuliga-Wiesi-Sandema road. Additionally, he introduced the “24-Hour Economy” policy to create jobs for the unemployed youth by encouraging businesses to extend their working hours.
