Prison Officers Accused of Assisting Chinese Prisoner’s Escape Exposed by CCTV Footage

Two prison officers, Joseph Oteng and Sergeant Isaac Boateng Bonsu, have been charged with conspiracy and aiding the escape of a Chinese prisoner, Wang Xiao, from the Nsawam Medium Prison. The accused correctional officers allegedly claimed that after visiting the hospital, they were approached by a car, which then drove away with the convict. However, CCTV footage from a hotel revealed a different story.

The footage showed that the accused officers escorted Wang Xiao to a hotel to meet his wife in a room. The convict and his wife allegedly escaped over the room’s balcony while the officers waited in the hotel reception area. The officers have pleaded not guilty.

The court, presided over by Mrs. Afia Owusua Appiah, granted the accused bail in the sum of GhC100,000 each, with two sureties to be justified. They are scheduled to reappear in court on April 9, 2024.

The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Wisdom Alorwu, stated that the complainant was the third in command at the Nsawam Medium Security Prisons, and the accused were serving under his supervision. The officers were detailed to escort Wang Xiao to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for treatment on February 7, 2024. After the convict was treated, the officers agreed to accompany him to a hotel to meet his wife in exchange for a reward.

According to the prosecution, the officers removed the convict’s handcuffs and took him to the hotel reception, where they informed the receptionist that they were there to see someone in one of the rooms. The convict and his wife allegedly fled through the balcony while the officers waited.

After the escape, the accused officers hid the handcuffs at Tema Station Hockey and informed their superiors in Nsawam that the convict had escaped in a taxi. However, investigations revealed the true sequence of events, leading to their arrest and appearance in court.
