President John Dramani Mahama has relieved Dr. George Akuffo Dampare of his duties as Inspector General of Police (IGP) and appointed COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno as his replacement. The swearing-in ceremony for the new IGP is scheduled for Friday, March 14, 2025.

While no official reason has been given for Dampare’s removal, sources indicate that the decision is part of Mahama’s broader security sector reforms aimed at restructuring the Ghana Police Service. The move follows weeks of speculation about changes in the leadership of key security institutions.

Dr. Akuffo Dampare, who was appointed IGP in 2021, is widely recognized for implementing key policing reforms, including strengthening community engagement, internal discipline, and operational efficiency. His tenure saw both praise and criticism, particularly regarding his approach to law enforcement and handling of high-profile cases.

COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, the new appointee, is an experienced police officer with decades of service in the Ghana Police Service. He has held various leadership roles, including Director-General of Operations and Accra Regional Police Commander. His appointment signals a potential shift in policing strategies under the Mahama administration.

Political analysts suggest that Mahama’s decision to replace the IGP is in line with his promise to enhance security and improve public confidence in law enforcement. The changes come at a time when issues such as crime rates, police professionalism, and public trust in the service remain key concerns.

The Ghana Police Service is yet to officially comment on the leadership transition, but security experts anticipate further adjustments within the service as Mahama’s administration seeks to implement its vision for law enforcement.
