President Akufo-Addo Explains the Causes of Rising Food Prices in Africa

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has provided insights into the causes of rising food prices across Africa.

Speaking at the Ukraine Peace Summit in Switzerland on Sunday, June 16, 2024, Mr. Akufo-Addo highlighted the significant moment in the shared quest for peace and justice.

He stressed that the goal of achieving a comprehensive, fair, and lasting peace for Ukraine is anchored in the tenets of international law and the UN Charter.

The African continent, he observed, has been gravely impacted by the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

“We are encountering further pressures on already fragile economies and striving to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic,” he mentioned in his speech.

He continued, “The blockade of the Black Sea has resulted in severe shortages and soaring food prices, triggering a food security crisis throughout Africa.

“This situation has led to a spike in the cost of living and a looming threat of hunger and malnutrition for the continent’s most vulnerable populations. The war’s consequences extend far beyond Ukraine, jeopardizing global stability and economic security.”

He also asserted that “Sustainable peace relies on open, honest, and inclusive dialogue. By reaffirming the commitment to the rule of law, respect for national sovereignty, and protection of human rights, the Summit offered a chance to bridge divides and lay the foundation for enduring peace.

“The Ukraine Peace Formula, which involves the cessation of hostilities, withdrawal of foreign troops, and restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity, serves as a crucial framework for achieving lasting peace.”

In a subsequent post on his Facebook page, Mr. Akufo-Addo said, “I urged the international community to unite in upholding international law and the principles of the UN Charter. I called for continued diplomatic, economic, and humanitarian support to facilitate a peaceful resolution.

“Recognizing the challenges on the path to peace, I expressed optimism that with collective determination and unwavering commitment to justice, a future where peace prevails is attainable.”
